Godly Advice for the Newly Engaged

Getting engaged is one of the most joy-filled, sacred, and overwhelming seasons of your life. I remember when Jason and I got engaged—I was excited, overwhelmed, hopeful, and full of questions. What should we be doing spiritually? How do we stay grounded in our faith while planning a wedding and preparing for marriage?

If you’re looking for Godly advice for the newly engaged, this is for you. This post is filled with encouragement, biblical wisdom, and practical tools Jason and I use ourselves.

Whether your engagement is a few months or a year long, I pray this helps you steward your hearts well in this precious season.

“Your engagement is not just a countdown to the wedding—it’s a setup for a lifelong covenant.”

Godly Advice for the Newly Engaged: Start With God First

Before you pick a wedding date, a venue, or even your colors—pause to pray. Ask God to center your engagement around Him. Our culture makes this season all about aesthetics and timelines. But this is a time to grow together spiritually before you grow together legally and publicly.

Here are three scriptures I leaned on when Jason and I first got engaged:

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
  • Matthew 6:33 (NIV) – “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
  • Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NLT) – “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

Godly Advice for the Newly Engaged: Face Spiritual Challenges Together

Engagement is not just spiritual highs. The enemy loves to attack couples when they’re close to making a covenant. Here are a few challenges you might face—and scriptures to arm yourself with:

1. Temptation (Sexual or Emotional)

Engagement often intensifies physical and emotional intimacy. Set boundaries early and often.

Scripture to Lean On: 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, 1 Corinthians 10:13

Pray For: Purity, self-control, mutual respect

2. Family or Friend Conflicts

Sometimes, everyone has opinions about your engagement or wedding. It can cause division or tension.

Scripture to Lean On: Romans 12:18, Colossians 3:13

Pray For: Unity, humility, wise counsel, peaceful communication

3. Doubt or Anxiety

Even godly couples question if they’re “ready.” That’s normal. But don’t stay in fear.

Scripture to Lean On: Philippians 4:6-7, Isaiah 26:3

Pray For: Peace, clarity, confirmation, courage

4. Busyness Over Intimacy With God

Engagement planning can distract you from your prayer life.

Scripture to Lean On: Luke 10:38-42, Psalm 46:10

Pray For: Prioritizing God, rest, stillness, intimacy with Jesus
