Praying the Priorities of God as a Newly Engaged Couple

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” — Matthew 6:33 (NLT)

When you’re newly engaged, everything feels like a whirlwind — from the excitement of the proposal to the rush of wedding planning. Amid the Pinterest boards and venue tours, it’s easy to get caught up in the “what” and forget the “why.”

God didn’t just bring you together to plan a beautiful wedding. He brought you together to build a kingdom-minded marriage. And the best way to prepare for that kind of love story? Pray God’s priorities over your relationship.

“Don’t just plan for the day — pray for the decades.”

Why Pray God’s Priorities?

Because God sees the full picture. He sees the seasons you’ll walk through that aren’t covered in lace and linen. He sees the future children you may raise, the battles you’ll face, and the legacy you’ll leave. Praying His priorities aligns your hearts not just with each other — but with Him.

1. Pray for Purpose Over Perfection

Ask God to reveal His unique purpose for your union. While wedding culture pushes us toward perfection, God calls us toward purpose. Your engagement isn’t just a countdown to a ceremony — it’s a sacred season of preparation.

Prayer Point:
“God, help us to seek Your purpose for our relationship. Strip away anything superficial, and show us how we can serve You better together than we could apart.”

2. Pray for Unity in Spirit

Engagement is beautiful, but it can also reveal differences in expectations, communication, and family dynamics. Unity doesn’t mean uniformity — it means being of one Spirit.

Prayer Point:
“Lord, bind our hearts together in Your love. Help us make decisions in agreement with Your Word and Your will. Teach us to value unity over ego.”

3. Pray for a Foundation of Faith

Before you build a home, you need a strong foundation. The same is true for marriage. Make this a time of spiritual growth — together. Read Scripture, fast, pray, and ask God to deepen your dependence on Him.

Prayer Point:
“Jesus, be the cornerstone of our relationship. Teach us to love You more than we love each other, and may everything we do be built on Your truth.”

4. Pray for Emotional and Sexual Integrity

Engagement can bring both temptation and vulnerability. While the world may downplay boundaries, God honors purity — in thought, word, and deed. This isn’t about shame. It’s about holiness.

Prayer Point:
“Holy Spirit, guard our minds and bodies. Teach us to honor each other with purity, and give us strength to wait on Your timing.”

5. Pray for Discernment in Planning

God cares about the details — not just of your wedding, but your future. Invite Him into every decision, from budget to guest list to where you’ll live after the vows.

Prayer Point:
“Father, we want our plans to reflect Your heart. Give us discernment in our choices and help us make room for You in every part of our journey.”

6. Pray for a Legacy of Love

You’re not just planning a wedding — you’re planting a legacy. Pray for generational blessings, for the healing of family wounds, and for the people your marriage will impact.

Prayer Point:
“God, let our love story be a testimony of Your faithfulness. May our marriage point others to Christ and leave a lasting legacy of grace, faith, and love.”

Final Thoughts

Engagement is holy ground. It’s not just about the “yes” or the dress — it’s about laying a spiritual foundation that will hold up under life’s pressures. When you pray God’s priorities, you invite His presence, His power, and His peace into your future.

Don’t just prepare for a wedding. Prepare for a marriage rooted in Christ.
